Atmavachan

Servant of God Fr. Bruno Kaniarakath CMI (1894–1991), affectionately known as Atmavachan (Spirit-Filled Father), was born on 20 November 1894 at Ramapuram, Kerala, as Devasia Kaniarakath. Inspired from childhood by Blessed Kunjachan Thevarparampil, he joined the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), made his first religious profession on 14 November 1915, and was ordained a priest on 20 May 1923.

For over 68 years of priestly ministry, Fr. Bruno lived a life of profound prayer, humility, and selfless service. He served in several CMI monasteries across Kerala and Karnataka, dedicating himself to pastoral care, evangelization, the upliftment of the poor and Dalit Christians, and the spiritual formation of countless faithful. Widely revered as a holy priest and compassionate spiritual guide, he was known for his unwavering faith, simplicity, and extraordinary concern for those in need.

Throughout his life, many people sought his prayers and blessings for healing, protection, and guidance. Devotees continue to testify to favours received through his intercession, earning him a lasting reputation as a powerful intercessor and a model of Christian holiness. His mortal remains rest at St. Anne's Monastery, Kurianad, where pilgrims continue to visit his tomb in prayer and thanksgiving.

Recognizing his exemplary life and the widespread devotion among the faithful, the cause for his Beatification and Canonization was initiated in 2018. Following detailed investigations by ecclesiastical commissions and the approval of the Syro-Malabar Synod and the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, Fr. Bruno was officially declared Servant of God on 15 December 2021 by Bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt of Pala.

The diocesan inquiry is currently in progress, with witness testimonies and historical investigations continuing under the guidance of the appointed commissions. The Church remains prayerfully committed to advancing his cause, while the devotion to Atmavachan Fr. Bruno Kaniarakath CMI continues to inspire and strengthen the faith of countless people.
